So for the first time in a long time I packed up the gear and went on a little photo expedition. I have been down south to the Arcadia Valley a few times before, but not in a while. At two hours away and with the ability to explore most of the place in three hours it was a good destination for a half-day trip. So I got up relatively early to get the morning sun and headed south.
As soon as I got on I-44 (a road I would only be on for a mile) I was shown a spectacular sunrise. The kind with those amazing rays radiating out from firey orange clouds that have the golden lining. It was almost behind the arch. Simply stunning.
I arrived at Elephant Rocks at 8a and poked around for about an hour. Elephant Rocks state park is just a loop trail around a lumpy granite ridge. There are boulders on top of the ridge. ”Standard” photos include the rocks and the small pools of water in the rocks, as well as some tree/rock combo shots. And that’s pretty much what I took. I took some bracketed shots with HDR in mind as well. Mostly this is just composition practice.
Johnson Shut Ins State Park is just down the road from Elephant Rocks. Its name comes from the small pools of water (Shut Ins) formed in the granite river bed. The “standard” shots here involve the waterfalls formed as water flows over the granite and the pools of water. And that’s pretty much what I took.
As I drove around rural Iron, St Francis and Jefferson counties I found some interesting shots for my “Rural Commerce” project (more on that later), but I didn’t feel like stopping to get them. Because I’m lazy that way.
